PAL represents the next generation in aspheric optics. First generation aspheric IOLs are generally designed to compensate for corneal aberrations only when the lens is centered. Unfortunately clinically-occurring lens decentration and tilt are fairly common, and can cause these types of lenses to perform worse than a spherical lens under the same degree of misalignment. This is why PAL optic design takes into acoount a broad range of aberrations arising with lens misalignment. Consequently, PAL lenses enable better image quality under real world conditions.
